Canine ParatroopersMarine Sgt. Frank Spano, a scout dog handler with the 3rd Military Police Battalion, a unit of Marine Force Logistic Command jumps over DaNang with Lobo, his 75-pound scout dog.
Lobo is used on patrols to give Leathernecks an early silent warning of the enemy's presence. He was trained at the Army's Scout Dog school in Fort Benning, Georgia. The 12-week course covered obedience, basic scouting techniques and advanced scouting and detection of mines and booby-traps.
Spano made a special harness for Lobo that did not cut Lobo's circulation off. Lobo's muscles need to be relaxed for a jump. Lobo's harnes was attached to Spane with two clips. This allowed Spano to guide the parachute to a safe landing area. After the parachute opened, Lobo was lowered on a lanyard.
Lobo landed first and raced towards Spano with his tail happily wagging.
