Katchen Paulus
Katchen PaulusKatchen Paulus was a professional parachute jumper in aerial exhibition shows from the late 1880's to the early 1890's.Paulus, with Paul Letteman, developed the first packed parachute system. The canopy apex was tied to the interior of a canvas bag with breakcord. The lines and canopy were folded inside the canvas bag. The canvas bag was closed with breakcord and then attached to the balloon, used for ascent. As the jumper fell away the breakcord would break and release the stowed parachute.
Paulus also demonstrated the first intentional breakaway. After
a first parachute inflated, it was released and pulled open a
second parachute.
