Processes

There are several major processes that occur in nearly every parachute use. These are

Activation: opens the container and allows for pilot chute ejection into the airstream
Deployment: orderly unfolds a parachute to minimize forces and decrease the probability of a malfunction
Inflation: fills the parachute with air to provide the required lift and drag
Reefing: controls or limits inflation
Release: allows a parachute to separate from the payload or person
Steering: allows a parachute system to be guided to a specific location

Some uses, such as para-sailing, do not have a deployment or reefing process.
